Ramet Monastery, XIII century

Ramet Monastery is one of the most important holy places in Alba County, located in Geoagiului Valley or Monastery Valley, in the commune Ramet, placed at a distance of about 18 km from Galda de Jos and 35 km from Alba-Iulia. Built at the foot Trascau entry in Ramet Gorge, the monastery enjoys a quiet natural setting, full of unique landscapes.

 

The importance of this monastery is given primarily to its age, this place of worship being one of the oldest in the entire region of Transylvania. It seems that this monastery was built before 1337, year of dating one of his interior paintings. Ramet Monastery is a convent, where he currently leads a quiet existence about 95 people who have dedicated their lives to God.

 

But things were not always so. Like most holy places throughout the Romanian and the monastery had a troubled past, or because of historical circumstances or because of natural conditions. Although not official documents stating the date Founded building, tradition says that the first monastery was founded here by two monks, Ghenadie and Romulus, around 1214. The only way to find reliable data about the age of the church was represented by the identification date of most interior paintings.

According to the few existing historical data, it appears that a period which lasted about 100 years, the monastery was abandoned.

 

Events were quite unpleasant in the history of the monastery in 1762, when the building was bombed and largely destroyed. It had suffered and Habsburg domination, it was repeatedly damaged.

 

Despite all good damage they suffered over time, this was one of the most important centers of Orthodoxy in Transylvania.

 

The most important restoration of the Monastery Ramet took place between 1987-1989, when the old church was restored completely, was restored abbey, some cells were high and was built in 1982 and the new church, Saint Apostles Petru and Pavel Church.

The church painting was made in the fresco technique, in 10 stages, which were made in various important scenes from the Bible that are currently shown on the inner walls of the monastery. Both places have a typical architecture for Byzantine tradition, to which is added the gothic influences.

 

A perfect occasion for celebration for the faithful arrive at Ramet Monastery is the day on which the architectural ensemble celebrates its patron. Old Monastery has three patrons (Dedication Day): the Healing Spring, the Virgin Birth of Christ and St. Nicolae, and the new church has two patrons, Assumption day, and Saints Petru and Pavel day.

 

Those who cross the threshold of the monastic ensemble can find many traditional items for this region of Alba County, and embroidery, woven carpets or priestly garments. Tourists passing Monastery Ramet also have the opportunity to visit other tourist attractions such as: Ramet Gorge, which offers unique natural scenery and Narcissus Road, a tourist route that leads to Narcissus Glade near Cetii Stone, declared natural reservation.
