LAKES
Lake Iezer Ighiel
Trascaului Mountains encloses a splendid lake, Lake Iezer Ighiel, located in the karst plateau Ciumerna and having a depth of 8.95 m to. Surroundings the lake are very picturesque and suitable for rest and recreation, and together with towering forest beech that surround it, the lake is declared a nature reserve.
Iezer Lake is located under ridges of Trascaului Mountains, and it is part of the component 'Nature Reserve Iezerul Ighiel'. It lies at an altitude of 924 meters and is the largest karst lake in Romania, with a length of 450 m.
Also is the only lake in Romania situated on a limestone surface so that water from lake, flow in underground, creating the Ighiel river. Near the lake is a cottage of sylvicultural direction, which can be rented.
Ighiel lake is a wonderful natural lake located in the southern side of Trascaului Mountains. To get here, you have to deviate from the road connecting the city Alba-Iulia with the city Aiud, into Galda de Jos commune. From Galda de Jos are 26 km to the lake, at the foot of mountains, following the old Roman road of wine, Via Magna.
Lake Iezer Ighiel
Walking from Galda de Jos on the footsteps old Roman road it passes through villages Cricau and Bucerdea Vinoasa, settlements which speak for themselves about traditional concerns of residents. At Cricau is a gothic church XIII century, built, in turn, on the ruins of a Roman basilica.
After the village Ighiu, it leaves the paved road and continue on a forestry road, vehicle accessible, in Ighiel Valley, about 12 km to the beautiful lake Iezer. The lake is an emerald-green colour and is formed naturally by barrage a creek. Both lake and beech forest around it are protected areas. A foot trail, marked, leads from here to Ciumerna karst plateau, where you can admire the villages scattered over the high peaks of Trascaului.
