Fortified Evangelical Church of Cricau

Fortified Evangelical Church of Cricau was built by Saxons guests who have settled in Cricau around 1206. Two periods are known in the construction of the church, a Romanesque period (1206-1230) and a Gothic period (XV-XVI), which leads to the existence of both types of elements.

The church was built as a Romanesque basilica with three naves on an oval elevation. Closing semicircular portal in the west of the church was built in the thirteenth century, and narrowing occurred in 1684, as suggested by the inscriptions on the stone outside. The church was surrounded by a defensive fortification with four bastions.

In the shadow of the imposing church lies a mansion called San Benedictus, after the patron saint of the church nearby. The building belonged to the Count, Burger Adalbert, who owned a large area of land.

Burger Adalbert was a veritable Count of wine, since the area were, and still are, large areas planted with vines. After 1945 and until the restitution manor house was used as a repository of former CAP of Cricau. The building now belongs to a private entrepreneur who turned in tourist guest house.
