HISTORICAL MONUMENTS FROM VILLAGE MESENTEA
'Pious Paraskevi' Church from Mesentea, 1782
Church of Mesentea is a Christian Orthodox church located in the locality of the same name in Galda de Jos commune, Alba County. Mesentea village is a Romanian settlement, located on the beautiful lands of Alba County in a chosen area in Galzii Valley, just 21 kilometers from the town of Alba-Iulia, in the foothills Trascaului Mountains.
In 1674, according to the inscription in present stone church, there is in Mesentea a wooden Romanian church. Population of village had, on stone church building, 28 families of Romanians Orthodox. Between 1761-1763 still had no priest in the village. The books from Church domain were printed in 1699, 1760, 1761 and 1767. Among them is 'Chiriacodromionul of Balgrad', printed in 1699 decorated on a white page with a drawing in ink, representing 'Our Mother Paraskevi'. A note of the same volume mentions 'I wrote myself, Constandin ot Benic, learning from the priest of Mesentea in 1782'. Same priest Ioan from Mesentea one who at the time which was built church, is mentioned in another note in Gospel book of Blaj, printed in 1765.
The locality Mesentea is dominated by the presence of this stone church, which dates from the eighteenth century, year 1778. According to the inscription in the church - in 1674 - it looks like it was built on the foundation of the old wooden church. The frescoes of this church, faithful to the Byzantine tradition, is particularly valuable and belong to the artisans Stan Zugravul and Popovici, since 1783. The church is declared a historical monument.
Located in the center of the cemetery, on the terrace of a hill, the Church 'Pious Paraskeva' in Mesentea attention by elegance forms taken from architecture specific religious buildings of wood.
On this resemblance and information taken from an inscription painted in the narthex (now extinct) builds some experts who support construction of the brick-wall church in 1782 on the place of a wooden house of worship, the new building by taking on its traits: proportions modest (16.30 x 6.45 meters) high tower with gazebo on the original arcade and roofing shingles (unfortunately missing).
The inscription painted above the entrance south narthex, written by painter Stan of Rasinari is revealing in this respect: 'This year 1674, were the wooden church, which were broken. Archpriest of this place, Iosif Adamovici of Abrud, parish priest Ionul and painting in year 1782, painter Stan Popovici'.
'Pious Paraskevi' Church from Mesentea
The associating of local plan with the architecture elements taken from south of the Carpathians is obvious. Wallachian characteristics are found both in form of the sanctuary apse, and in coating system of interior spaces using caps on the pendant. Local interpretations consist of ellipsoidal plan, more elongated caps and their way of connecting with wall support, directly or through pendant and pair springs.
In 2006 conservation and restoration works of the Church 'Pious Paraskeva' in Mesentea have been completed, to the delight of the faithful and all those who wanted to achieve this objective. Were executed works of resistence structure reinforcement, new roof framing, roofing new, exterior plasters, emergency walkways, entrance steps, interior flooring, electrical and heating instalations.
In the current form, the building appears as a hall-church with bell tower on the west facade, narthex, nave and altar, each one having its own characteristics. The square shape, is embedded partially belfry creating the narthex thus may form on the inside, the walls of the base and side walls of the Church, the second symmetric spaces, one with a niche role, the other equipped with a staircase the upper floors of the bell.
The narthex, rectangular, is covered with a elliptical dome transverse, which successively download pendants pair springs, two pillars to the west or east wall directly. The nave vault is shaped like a circular caps, key elements being again pandantivii and double arches supported by columns in this case ados walls in the four corners of the square space. Cutout, semicircular exterior apse wearing a cap elliptical, oblong, placed directly on the walls.
On the railing that separates the nave narthex, entrance with stone surround semicircular arch is symmetrically framed opening round and oval windows, lying in the eardrum. Threshold and door surface are missing, keeping only the trapped iron hinges decorated pillars on edge. Temple wall is provided with three entrances closed in the upper semicircular arc and a rectangular niche above.
The foundation stone of the Church is, vertical walls of brick alternated with stone and brick vaults only. The floor is made of stone slabs. The walls have a thickness of 1...1.2 meters. Mural painting inside the church was made in a relatively short period, between 1781-1782, immediately after construction, by Stan, son of the priest Radu of Rasinari, interior design and keeping the whole unit, single case of religious wall monuments of Alba county. Stan from Rasinari is one of the most famous painters of the age.
The lower register of decoration is made of decorative panels divided in diagonally, framing plant motifs made in red, yellow and blue. The originality lies in the way personal iconographic program of choice, interpretation and transposition of religious subjects.
On the dome of the apse, the Trinity is surrounded by the Apostles, the lower register of the semicircular wall is for submitting the Holy Hierarchs. Vision of St. Peter of Alexandria and Jesus of compassions appear in niche ower the proscomidieur. In the same space, on the wall of the iconostasis, the sacrifice of Abraham takes place in a natural oriental frame. On the walls of hemicycle are painted Saints Hierarchs. On the back of the wall is Abraham's sacrifice. Temple wall is painted in fresco, with Jesus on the throne, flanked by the 12 Apostles.
Iron Cross from Mesentea
On entering the village Mesentea, from Galda de Jos, an iron cross on the right side, you attract the eye. It was built by followers of anti-Communist Resistance of Mesentea village, in memory of those who fought to sacrifice against the communist regime in the early years of domination.
Across the street, on the left, first house, hides a horrendous story, spent March 10, 1949. In early March 1949, the army and security climbed the mountain in front of this house. Must arrive here Stefan Popa (Nutu) from meeting in the forest by near Cricau. In the neighboring villages began arrests.
In the evening they returned from the meeting only Traian Gligor and Traian Marza, without Nutu. Later they heard the knock on the door and a voice resound in the night: 'Open! Security! '.
The house was surrounded, and the Security opened fire. Those in the house had been summoned several times to surrender, but they refused. Security asked for help from chiefs.
They had the certainty that in this house there are many people, because the two valiant always shoot the gun from other parts of the house. A Security platoon came to the rescue and the fight became even more fierce.
Meanwhile, one of the guys was shot. The other guy, raised body shot in the window, turned to enemies with submachine gun, and he always surrounded rooms, pulling in all positions.

Were again summoned to surrender. But the other fighter was shot and seriously wounded, and ammunition is over. He had a single cartridge. Hardly managed to open the window and shout: 'You can enter!' Then was heard a gunshot and the brave collapsed, giving soul.
Great was their surprise when they found only two fighters dead, and shame that it took so much army for two people. House riddled with bullets stayed long testimony with her impressive story of 10 March 1949 and the iron cross erected in 1991 with the names of the two fighters, Gligor Traian and Marza Traian reminds everyone about Romanians bravery to defend their ancestral land, and hearth in front of the communist invasion.
Troitza, Independence War and First World War, Mesentea
In memory of those who died for the country, participants from Mesentea, heroes of the Revolution of 1848 and the two World Wars, was erected a Troitza (wayside wooden cross) by ancestors, beautifully carved, located in the left of path going up to the Orthodox-Christian Church 'Pious Paraskeva' in Mesentea.
Here are commemorated in gratitude for Mesentea village heroes, and say a prayer of remembrance for revolutionary heroes, known and unknown, who have sacrificed for freedom, faith and dignity of the Romanian people in the Independence War and First War World and who sacrificed their lives for the unification of country in Second World War.
